Stellar Seller, lillyella

This week's Stellar Seller is lillyella. Not only is she a Stellar Seller, she's also an inspiration to any of us Etsy sellers who have pipe dreams of crafting full-time. Last year, she managed to successfully quit her day job and switch to all Etsy, all the time! Check out her Storque feature on the process and read her interview below! Also, fall in love with her blog at http://lillyella.blogspot.com/

Thanks Nicole for being Stellar!!!

Tell us and the Etsy world a bit about you, anything you'd like to share...

My name is Nicole and I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio where I currently live with my fiance, Tyler, and our menagerie of furry and feathered friends. For me, life before Etsy was 10 years as a graphic designer and photographer (and part-time dance instructor, which I still do today). About five years into my career, I began dreaming of having my own design business. Five years later, I finally decided to do it. Etsy was going to be a way to make some extra money in case business was slow. Little did I know that a few months later, it would take over my life.

How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?

My best friend, Kara (CharmantShop.etsy.com), told me about Etsy one day. I believe a friend in her neighborhood turned her on and when she told me about it she said, 'We could totally do this'. Well, I'm not sure if she used the word totally - that's something I would say - but you know what I mean :) Since I had always been crafty and had been making jewelry my entire life, I decided to give it a go. We both opened shops shortly thereafter.

How did you get into jewelry making?

I can't even remember when it first started. I've always been into anything I can do with my hands and everything artistic. From the time i was old enough, I remember walking up to the local craft store and picking a new project every week and through the years I've dabbled in just about everything including, candle making, soap making, paper crafts, crocheting, sewing, woodworking, ceramics and on and on. Jewelry was one thing that always stuck (along with drawing and photography). My style always changed and my skill level along with it as I got older, but it was always my primary love. I was thrilled to find such an awesome outlet for me to be able to share my creations with others.

How have you done so well in only a bit over one year on Etsy? Any secrets to your success that you'd like to share? ;)

Oh boy, I wish I did have a secret that I could share but honestly, I guess my Dad was right when he told me that hard work pays off. I'm intensely dedicated to everything I do - in my personal life and my professional life. It, of course, helps that I have a great passion for it. When you love what you do, it shows. But it certainly hasn't been easy. I have sacrificed a lot if my personal life, especially when it comes to time for pleasure, and sleep :) I work about 13- 16 hours a day and sleep about 4. One year in and I still see no hope of ever finding a balance, but I do strive for it everyday. The few things that I think have helped me - a quality product, of course, good customer service, being active in the Etsy community - in the way of making Treasuries, attending Virtual Labs, joining a team etc. Also, having a blog and working really hard to make it something people want to read. These days I put almost as much time into my blog as I do on my shop. Finally, you have to stay on top of your game, ahead of the pack. There is so much competition out there, especially in my craft. When you get really busy, the last thing you have time for is working on new designs, but situations I've had the unfortunate experience of dealing with, have made me realize how important it is to stay on top of it and make time for new pieces.

Owls Find TWILIGHT!

Okay, so I'm going on the record to say I'm NOT a Twilight fan. Really. I'm not. But I keep seeing all of these commercials for the movie, and everyone's talking about it, so I thought I might check and see how much Twilight stuff is out there on Etsy. Turns out there's quite a bit. This Owlfinds is just the tip of the interesting stuff. Okay Fangirls, let the crazy screaming begin!

Stellar Seller: Deadcraft

If you haven't read one of our Stellar Seller features before, the point is simple: We are not only Etsy sellers, but Etsy buyers as well, and we want to share some of our favorite purchases and great shopping experiences with the community at large. :)

This week's Stellar Seller was nominated by yours truly, suenosdejmi. I did some geek-friendly Christmas shopping for my boyfriend this year, and back in the summer when I was planning it out I stumbled across Deadcraft and her shop full of precious crocheted dolls!

Among my favorites are Link (I mean, come on, he's adorable!) and Cloud (can you tell I'm a gamer??), but the actual purchase that I had from her shop was the Batman doll below. Although it shipped from the Philippines, I got it quite quickly (I think it was something like a week and a half) and was packaged carefully and with care. I was just so happy with my purchase!!! So I nominated Deadcraft to be featured on our blog, and here we are! Read her interview and enjoy!!

Tell us and the Etsy world a bit about you, anything you'd like to share...

My name is Nissie, and I'm currently residing in the Philippines, which is easily one of the best places to live in if you'd like to go be inspired by good eccentrically urban art. I'd love to be a fiction writer someday, but until then, I divide my time with crochet and a bit of freelance writing during the day, and masked vigilante-ing at night. The latter doesn't really earn much, but I get to scare a lot of people for no reason, and that's almost as good. In between all that, I maintain sporadic blogs at both http://www.paperheroes.net for crafty things, and http://www.traveling.ph, a travel journal shared with my boyfriend.

How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?

I remember a few friends recommending that I sell some of my dolls online from time to time, citing etsy as the example. I've never tried selling online before, and thought there would be far too many pitfalls involved, so I didn't think much of it. After the fifty ninth time they suggested it, I gave up and finally agreed to give it a try. (Those same friends now have their own little dolls as a thank you.) I wasn't quite sure at first if I could even make sales, but etsy was so ridiculously easy to list and promote, that I quickly fell in love with it! Roughly half the sales I get come from etsy, and that's a lot.

How did you get into crocheting, and also into making the dolls?

Pretty much the most ridiculous reason to get into crocheting, I think: I couldn't sew. But I wanted to make dolls for myself and to make gifts for friends, and for someone who couldn't sew in a straight line even if her life depended on it, cloth plushies were obviously not the way to go. Trying to figure out other possibilities, I stumbled across crocheting in a youtube video, of all places. It took about a month of attempting and a lot of trial and error, mostly because I'm left-handed and most instructions favor the righties, but eventually I did learn. I'm not usually patient when it comes to using other people's patterns / instructions though, so right after learning the techniques I went right into making my own patterns, though for the most part they're usually freeform.

How do you choose which dolls to make?

The first dozen or so dolls I'd made were those from genres or series that I myself adored. My Mr. Darcy doll was the first ever completed prototype that I made, and it's still one of my favorites. Later on, some customers emailed, asking if I could make specific dolls for them. Some of those caught on and were also requested by a lot of other people, so I added them to my main list. I think I'm particularly proud of my Mythbusters dolls, especially. Being a geek at heart, orders that fall under particularly geeky fandoms make my heart go squee.

Describe yourself in 1 word: moist

Do you have a favorite:

word or saying? "The reason I talk to myself is that I'm the only one whose answers I accept." I love George Carlin.

type of food? Sushi! Food that I don't have to cook (and possibly burn down the kitchen during the attempt) is always a good idea to me!

blog or website you frequent on a regular basis? The Onion is sheer genius. I'm also a big Stephen Colbert fan, so I make a pit stop over at Cobert Nation from time to time.

holiday? I love Halloween. We need more days when it's not odd for adults who are kids at heart to be able to dress up like one without needing to explain themselves.

Etsy seller? every once in awhile, I go and stare at thyme2dream's amazing works. Also, if I had Artsy's talent I could probably be ruling the world by now.

Owl Spotlight: Gypsy Eye Studio

Hello fellow Etsians, Gypsy Eye Studio came about by my love of accessories and history. All of my life I have adored the fashion from so many historical eras, and would love to create the same kind of elegance. I always seem to be so fascinated by the textures of vintage fabrics and the intricate craftsmanship of antique jewelry.

Everyday when I get to sit and create new pieces it takes me to by gone days. There is a lot of inspiration from the Edwardian, Victorian, and Art Deco design in the pieces created at Gypsy Eye Studio. So often in the past, such dark design motifs were transformed into beautiful treasures.

Beetles, snakes and spiders are common themes in many Gypsy Eye Studio accessories. I feel that it is important to embrace the beauty in all things. The more unusual, the better. A lot of times through the day we pass up the most exquisite creative influences by only seeing the initial startle they give, but I believe that many other artists, not just myself, would appreciate knowing that we have the same attention focusing factor.

Gypsy Eye Studio is concluding its first fledgling year with Etsy and will be releasing a new line shortly. Stay tuned and visit us at http://gypsyeye.etsy.com

Owls Find Kokeshi!

I recently discovered Takara (see pictured below top left) from Beladonna and fell in love. I entered to win her at Beladonna's blog but I never win anything. I had never heard of Kokeshi dolls before, so after falling in love with her I had to see what else Etsy had to offer in the line of Kokeshi themed items. I found enough to easily fill a treasury, the ones in this owlfinds list are some of my favorites. Shop links are listed below in order of pictured from top to bottom. Enjoy!

Owl Spotlight, JamieLeto

hello fellow owls and faithful etsian readers.. and everyone else in between! i'm so thrilled to be writing my first etsyowls spotlight blog! but what to write about... well it never has been hard for me to write so why start being difficult now? hehe.

well, i took a hiatus from etsy recently to just regain my focus and balance my workload outside of the online world. i took a month or two off and i'm back with new ideas and an entire etsy shop full of discounted prices. for the past year i've sold knitted goods as well as plenty of zines and nautical themed jewelry, but somewhere in the start of this year i was feeling disconnected to it and felt as though i should sit on some new ideas.

these are just some of the things currently on sale in my etsy shop. i've set the prices sufficiently lower than what they had been because i'm trying to clear it all out. so on my journey to find what my next creative venture will be, i just basically stumbled into myself. there wasn't much looking involved, but more thinking. thinking what i connect with, what i enjoy and what i'd like to share with others. it took me about five minutes after sitting down, while on etsy hiatus, to think of what i'd really love to do. i've done jewelry, i've done knitting, i've done paper goods, i've done zines.. and then i just looked around and it was clear to me what was next, and it's decoupage.

anyone who knows me, if they go away knowing of one thing, it's probably going to be my extensive love of collaging. still living with my family, over the past few years my walls have just become covered. i love collaging, i love matching colors, putting things together and creating visual splendor. i never really thought about branching out in this sense, but while participating in my typical collaging, and through constantly seeing my friends' reactions to my work, i just thought, i enjoy this, etsy enjoys art, why not mix the two? so i came off my hiatus in time, put my whole etsy shop on sale to get rid of old stock, and with the money i make from the old stock i will pay off my parents for the tv on the radio tickets i 'needed' (in my impulsive buying ways and my desires to not let my boyfriend pay for absolutely everything) and will invest in my new ideas. my first project will be a sort of jewelry box collaged decoupage-style with photos from national geographic magazine. hopefully my sales will pick up soon so i'll be enabled to do this.

ps- steve buscemi recently got a twitter and if 1,000 people send photos of them holding a dollar with 'steve buscemi is on twitter' written on it, he'll shave his head! LET'S DO IT! he's at twitter.com/steve_buscemi!

Owl Spotlight, WeiOpenSecret

I want to share with my fellow OWLs members and blog visitors and readers these cute gift tags as a Thank You. I created this Fifi the Penguin character few years ago and just recently revisited it because some buyers requested it.

There are circle marks set up for you in the file (PDF file format). When you print this file out on a card stock, simply punch out each penguin within the marks. If you have a circle hole punch dia. 1” to 1.5”, it will work just fine. And of course you’ll need another smaller hole punch for the tiny hole on top.

I hope you enjoy this gift tag template and if you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and I promise I will get back to you. Thank you!

Get the tags here:

http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&attid=0.2&thid=11ff661354c1c7b0&mt=application%2Fpdf&pli=1

Editors Note: Please post a comment if you are having problems getting the tags to show up. You should be able to view and print the PDF file from the page above, and also download it. Remember these tags are property of WeiOpenSecret and that they shouldn't be used for resell and to refer anyone who loves them to Wei's shop. Thanks!

Wei runs Wei's Open Secret -- a fun mix of different jewelry styles and gorgeous items like the sweet Choo Choo tags, and of course Fifi the Penguin! Other than her Etsy shop, you can also find her at her blog You can also read her other Owl Spotlights here

Stellar Seller: SparklePaw

We'd like to welcome back our Stellar Seller feature, the first ever of our blog features! The point of this feature is simple:

We are sellers who love to shop, and we like to share our awesome experiences with the world. So, here we are, sharing our shopping joys. Go! Buy!

The first Stellar Seller this time around is Leslie of
SparklePaw She was nominated by CagedBirdSings who bought the delightful little pocket mirror pictured above as a Christmas present for her sister. Click her shop name to check out her shop, and see the bottom of the interview for more items from her shop!

Tell us and the Etsy world a bit about you, anything you'd like to share

My name is Leslie and I'm a graphic designer living in San Diego. SparklePaw is a relatively new adventure for me, but I've always loved design, art, crafting, and cute things!

How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?

I met Etsy through a co-worker and it was definitely love at first sight. I've discovered so many amazing artists and crafters since finding Etsy - I can't imagine how I lived without it! My house if filled with stuff from Etsy.

How did you get into making what you make?

I often make little cards for friends' birthdays and such, so once I discovered Etsy, I decided to develop those into a series. I've always loved sweet, friendly animals which I think comes from my time living in Japan as a girl. The stationary and candy is adorned with the most adorable, happy characters!

Describe yourself in 1 word: Pisces

Do you have a favorite:

Owl Spotlight--InkyPaws

Well, given a chance to talk about anything I want, the odds are that I will probably decide to talk about my dog! (Who wouldn't?) I absolutely love dogs, even though I'm slightly allergic to even the "hypo-allergenic" ones, and a lot more allergic to the shedding ones. I was very excited when I got my Shih Tzu, Scrabble, as you might imagine.

Scrabble is a funny dog. He is very un-doglike in a lot of ways - such as:
1. He almost never barks, and certainly never when someone comes to the door!

2. He is deathly afraid of every single dog in the world except one. That one dog happened to be a big, lumbering black lab, and Scrabble was so excited to have finally found the one dog he could dominate!

3. He doesn't wolf his food down. Actually, we have to coax him to eat.

4. He doesn't really like walks. He loves the IDEA of going on a walk, but once you get him out there he acts all pitiful.

The times when he's the most adorable thing ever are usually when he's sleeping. He'll start having some funny dream or something, and he'll make whimpering noises and his legs will twitch. Then, when he wakes up he usually stretches out, and makes all the females in the room go, "Awww he's so CUTE!"

So, there you go. An introduction to my pup, Scrabble!

The voice behind Inky Paws is Chloe, one of our newer and younger Owls. In addition to such talents as freehanding delightful knitted foods, her Etsy shop is full of cute little felted animals, greeting cards, and more. She's also currently on a world-exploring trip that we hope to see tons of photos from!!! She has a previous Owl Spotlight here To find out more about Chloe, you can also visit her blog at knitonequilttoo.typepad.com/chloe/

Burrowing Owls: Orange

The Burrowing Owls feature highlights unique owls we find on Etsy. None of the owls featured in these posts are from our member shops.

To start off this new feature, we posted a thread in the Etsy forums calling for anyone and everyone to share their owls! We got and are still getting a lot of great responses, and we're going to start sharing those owls right here right now! Some of the first posts we got were orange, so I decided to go with an orange theme. It makes me think retro for some reason. Click the links below the picture to check out all the shops! Enjoy!

Pictured top to bottom, left to right:

  • an adorable zipper pouch from bizzielizzie
  • owl bag hanger from myladida, it's absolutely perfect for keeping your bag off the floor anywhere in public, like a crowded restaurant, and would be perfect for travelling!
  • pillowcase from BreeLeeD that mixes adorable orange owls with a splash of pink, it's too precious!
  • cute little owl towel from melysbaby
  • owl tags from ThePoint
  • sweet little vintage napkin holder from endlessvintage

Up & Coming...

In order to get a much more active team blog, we've decided to add a few new features to the blog. In addition to the Owl Spotlights where we have our individual members talk about whatever they want to, we're also working on bringing back our Stellar Seller feature as well. We haven't had a Stellar Seller feature since September, and we're about ready to share some of our awesome purchasing experiences from the holiday season.

We're also adding some brand new features, one feature (that we haven't name yet) will be us highlighting some of our favorite owls on Etsy. As in, real owls. :) The second feature, called Owl Finds, will highlight some items from Etsy that we like that all follow a similiar theme. For example, The Owls Find Trees would show some of our favorite picks that are trees. We're excited about this one as we have a lot of favorite things (and we tend to like similiar things, as teammates) so we're really looking forward to sharing our favorites with the world! So stay tuned!

Owl Spotlight: KnitANDPearl - the Madness Behind the Magic

So, I had been making jewelry and knitting for a few years... just mostly messing around and not having much confidence in my work. I would get custom work here and there but it never occurred to me that selling it was something I could do. One day, a friend mentioned Etsy to me and my life has never been the same!

There are two components to my shop that people always ask about: The Corn Dog and Jimmy.

The Corn Dog is my little mascot! I don't know where it came from or when
my obsession with corn dogs began, but I love them and I want to spread that love. This little corn dog is magic. I like to send him out in button form to my buyers. I even had corn dog Thank You notes made, courtesy of PresentsforPirates!

Jimmy is my scarf model! I work with Jimmy at Wishbone (super wonderful restaurant that I manage
when I'm not crafting).
One day he said to me, "I bet my face could sell a scarf faster that yours." So far that hasn't been proven, but I *do* get the most comments on the items with his face on them! Jimmy is a waiter by day and a budding stand-up comic by night. He and I are pretty weird alone, but put us together and it's
pure insanity.

As far as my shop goes, I really craft seasonally. In the winter, I mostly make scarves and gloves. Once summer sets in, I switch to jewelry. I'm not sure why I work like this, but it's been the trend as of late.
I've been experimenting with different lace patterns in knitting and I'm working up the courage to start some intarsia work!
My hope for the upcoming season is to start working with metal clay and doing more unique jewelry designs.

Here are some other things you should know about me:
I live in the greatest city in the world, Chicago!
I am an 80 year old woman trapped in the ultra sexy body of a 26 year old.
I've been married for four years to a wonderful man, Nick, who makes guitars in his spare time! (yeah, did I mention we NEVER see each other!?)We have a little bunny rabbit named Turkey. She's kind of an ass.I've recently ventured into yarn dying! You can read all about my first experience here on my blog.
I know how to play the drums. I don't really have time for that these days though! :(
I have a big enough yarn collection that I could probably open a shop.
I make really good Red Curry.

That's all for now, kids!
