Coming Soon: Saturday Stellar Seller!
Along with the new of our new blog comes some of the old, being our Stellar Seller feature that we've done since we started out as a team. The main objective of the Stellar Seller feature is to highlight the achievements and styles of individual Etsy artists, sellers with a good sales history, exceptional feedback, and a flair for the unique. These featured sellers are sometimes selected randomly, or noticed through their actions in the Etsy community, or also by selling one of us Owls something and being fantastic about it! The new Stellar Seller feature will be called the Saturday Stellar Seller, and will be published weekly on the Owls blog. We will also try to promote these interviews on the Etsy forums, so that as many people can discover the featured artist as possible! The first interview will be posted Saturday, so stay tuned!!!

My name is Leslie and I'm a graphic designer living in San Diego. SparklePaw is a relatively new adventure for me, but I've always loved design, art, crafting, and cute things!
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
I met Etsy through a co-worker and it was definitely love at first sight. I've discovered so many amazing artists and crafters since finding Etsy - I can't imagine how I lived without it! My house if filled with stuff from Etsy.
How did you get into making what you make?
I often make little cards for friends' birthdays and such, so once I discovered Etsy, I decided to develop those into a series. I've always loved sweet, friendly animals which I think comes from my time living in Japan as a girl. The stationary and candy is adorned with the most adorable, happy characters!

Tell us and the Etsy world a bit about you, anything you'd like to share...
My name is Nicole and I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio where I currently live with my fiance, Tyler, and our menagerie of furry and feathered friends. For me, life before Etsy was 10 years as a graphic designer and photographer (and part-time dance instructor, which I still do today). About five years into my career, I began dreaming of having my own design business. Five years later, I finally decided to do it. Etsy was going to be a way to make some extra money in case business was slow. Little did I know that a few months later, it would take over my life.
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
My best friend, Kara (CharmantShop.etsy.com), told me about Etsy one day. I believe a friend in her neighborhood turned her on and when she told me about it she said, 'We could totally do this'. Well, I'm not sure if she used the word totally - that's something I would say - but you know what I mean :) Since I had always been crafty and had been making jewelry my entire life, I decided to give it a go. We both opened shops shortly thereafter.
How did you get into jewelry making?
I can't even remember when it first started. I've always been into anything I can do with my hands and everything artistic. From the time i was old enough, I remember walking up to the local craft store and picking a new project every week and through the years I've dabbled in just about everything including, candle making, soap making, paper crafts, crocheting, sewing, woodworking, ceramics and on and on. Jewelry was one thing that always stuck (along with drawing and photography). My style always changed and my skill level along with it as I got older, but it was always my primary love. I was thrilled to find such an awesome outlet for me to be able to share my creations with others.
How have you done so well in only a bit over one year on Etsy? Any secrets to your success that you'd like to share? ;)
Oh boy, I wish I did have a secret that I could share but honestly, I guess my Dad was right when he told me that hard work pays off. I'm intensely dedicated to everything I do - in my personal life and my professional life. It, of course, helps that I have a great passion for it. When you love what you do, it shows. But it certainly hasn't been easy. I have sacrificed a lot if my personal life, especially when it comes to time for pleasure, and sleep :) I work about 13- 16 hours a day and sleep about 4. One year in and I still see no hope of ever finding a balance, but I do strive for it everyday. The few things that I think have helped me - a quality product, of course, good customer service, being active in the Etsy community - in the way of making Treasuries, attending Virtual Labs, joining a team etc. Also, having a blog and working really hard to make it something people want to read. These days I put almost as much time into my blog as I do on my shop. Finally, you have to stay on top of your game, ahead of the pack. There is so much competition out there, especially in my craft. When you get really busy, the last thing you have time for is working on new designs, but situations I've had the unfortunate experience of dealing with, have made me realize how important it is to stay on top of it and make time for new pieces.

Stellar Seller: Deadcraft
If you haven't read one of our Stellar Seller features before, the point is simple: We are not only Etsy sellers, but Etsy buyers as well, and we want to share some of our favorite purchases and great shopping experiences with the community at large. :)
This week's Stellar Seller was nominated by yours truly, suenosdejmi. I did some geek-friendly Christmas shopping for my boyfriend this year, and back in the summer when I was planning it out I stumbled across Deadcraft and her shop full of precious crocheted dolls!

Among my favorites are Link (I mean, come on, he's adorable!) and Cloud (can you tell I'm a gamer??), but the actual purchase that I had from her shop was the Batman doll below. Although it shipped from the Philippines, I got it quite quickly (I think it was something like a week and a half) and was packaged carefully and with care. I was just so happy with my purchase!!! My name is Nissie, and I'm currently residing in the Philippines, which is easily one of the best places to live in if you'd like to go be inspired by good eccentrically urban art. I'd love to be a fiction writer someday, but until then, I divide my time with crochet and a bit of freelance writing during the day, and masked vigilante-ing at night. The latter doesn't really earn much, but I get to scare a lot of people for no reason, and that's almost as good. In between all that, I maintain sporadic blogs at both http://www.paperheroes.net for crafty things, and http://www.traveling.ph, a travel journal shared with my boyfriend.
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
I remember a few friends recommending that I sell some of my dolls online from time to time, citing etsy as the example. I've never tried selling online before, and thought there would be far too many pitfalls involved, so I didn't think much of it. After the fifty ninth time they suggested it, I gave up and finally agreed to give it a try. (Those same friends now have their own little dolls as a thank you.) I wasn't quite sure at first if I could even make sales, but etsy was so ridiculously easy to list and promote, that I quickly fell in love with it! Roughly half the sales I get come from etsy, and that's a lot.
How did you get into crocheting, and also into making the dolls?
Pretty much the most ridiculous reason to get into crocheting, I think: I couldn't sew. But I wanted to make dolls for myself and to make gifts for friends, and for someone who couldn't sew in a straight line even if her life depended on it, cloth plushies were obviously not the way to go. Trying to figure out other possibilities, I stumbled across crocheting in a youtube video, of all places. It took about a month of attempting and a lot of trial and error, mostly because I'm left-handed and most instructions favor the righties, but eventually I did learn. I'm not usually patient when it comes to using other people's patterns / instructions though, so right after learning the techniques I went right into making my own patterns, though for the most part they're usually freeform.
How do you choose which dolls to make?
The first dozen or so dolls I'd made were those from genres or series that I myself adored. My Mr. Darcy doll was the first ever completed prototype that I made, and it's still one of my favorites. Later on, some customers emailed, asking if I could make specific dolls for them. Some of those caught on and were also requested by a lot of other people, so I added them to my main list. I think I'm particularly proud of my Mythbusters dolls, especially. Being a geek at heart, orders that fall under particularly geeky fandoms make my heart go squee.

type of food? Sushi! Food that I don't have to cook (and possibly burn down the kitchen during the attempt) is always a good idea to me!
blog or website you frequent on a regular basis? The Onion is sheer genius. I'm also a big Stephen Colbert fan, so I make a pit stop over at Cobert Nation from time to time.
holiday? I love Halloween. We need more days when it's not odd for adults who are kids at heart to be able to dress up like one without needing to explain themselves.
Etsy seller? every once in awhile, I go and stare at thyme2dream's amazing works. Also, if I had Artsy's talent I could probably be ruling the world by now.

Hi owl lovers! My name is Shelly and I am a lucky wife to a wonderful hubby and stay at home mom to my darling Lilyana. I heart paper, fabric, sewing, crocheting, jewelry making, graphic design and love dreaming up new crafty creations (which usally take place in the wee hours of the night)! I have a passion for collecting vintage, traveling, the outdoors and decorating. Most of my inspiration comes from different textiles, vintage emphemera and other incredibly talented crafters!

I discovered Etsy while searching online for a little girls pinafore tutorial. I had every intention of sewing one myself, until I ran into Etsy and all the fabulous sellers. I ended up BUYING several for my daughter instead of making one! It was definitely love at first sight. I opened up a shop within a month of discovering Etsy and haven't looked back.
*How did you get into making what you make?
I can remember being a tomboy at 6, making little houses and villages for worms, frogs and other various critters....all elaborate and functional, LOL! I loved seeing creations come to life and have been going ever since.

dessert? Puppy Chow (and not the kind for dogs)
book and/or author? I am more of a magazine kind of girl

I am a full time graphic designer and mother of 2 that is sleep deprived and stays up all night to create with my hands. An escape from my keyboard and mouse. ;-)
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
I first heard about Etsy from a very close friend whom suggested I list my crafts. Then after hearing more about it from online crafty groups I was convinced it was the place for me. Now I find myself shopping online even more.
How did you get into making felt food?
I had seen photos online of felt foods and knew it was something I could create myself. From there I was hooked and loved to see my daughter’s face when she saw my creations.
Describe yourself in 1 word: symmetrical – everything has to be just right.
Do you have a favorite:
word or saying? I am always caught saying “seriously?” I feel like I question everything and everyone.
Dessert – anything with chocolate and raspberries in the title. A divine pairing.
book and/or author? – not much of a reader unfortunately. Just blogs and email.
holiday? Birthdays! You can’t go wrong with being with loved ones, singing off key and eating cake

Tell us all about you, as much or as little as you'd love to share with the Etsy world.
Me. Working mom (ordained minister) of an almost 3 year old. Long time crafter, just beginning to explore myself as an artist.
Lets hear all about your shop & how you got started:
My shop is a mix of things I *like* to make and things that I would buy or use for my own child. My shop began as a whim~ I was cloth diapering my daughter and needed some clothes for summer, so I decided to dye and paint some for her. I was hooked and needed someplace to unload the rest... Etsy found me and so it began!
We focus on natural toys for children, because we believe so firmly in the value of imagination and wonder in child hood. Children grow up far too quickly. Our toys are simple, made of natural materials and play is lead by the child (and not the other way around as with battery operated toys etc.). Our core product is our hand dyed and painted clothing featuring bright colours and lots of whimsy to delight little ones. My recent foray into felting has opened up a whole new avenue of creation!
I have a well of creativity that seems to overflow and BTRT is the perfect outlet!
What inspires you to create?
My daughter. The amazing journey children make into awareness of the world and themselves. I love colour and texture and seeing them come together. I love the chaos of dyeing~ the possibility continues to draw me to create.

1. Tell us all about you, as much or as little as you'd love to share with the Etsy world.
I'm 29, going to school full time to become an occupational therapist, and work part time as a ballroom dance instructor. I love using crafts as my own form of "therapy" and hope to share my interests with others. I started becoming interested in my store, Giftbird when I became obsessed with owls and bird jewelry. I wanted to make a few owl and bird necklaces to see if other people would have similar shopping interests and so far, I've found that people like my style. I hope to continue to share my love of birds, roosters, owls, with other people.
2. What made you get started with making jewelry, and how'd you end up on Etsy?
My sister and mother both make jewelry. I wanted to learn how to make jewelry so I could have fun with my family. We used to go to the jewelry store together and I would sit and watch. After a while, I wanted to learn how to make jewelry as well.
3. What inspires you to create?
I love to be crafty. I love looking and shopping on etsy for new inspiration. Usually, I'm also trying to come up with something for one my classes (Occupational Therapy school) that is functional and creative.
4. Describe yourself in one word: Determined
5. What is your favorite:
--song to craft to? anything Latin. I love Latin music of all kinds to craft to, dance to, sing to, etc.
--off-air television show? Chuck (I think it is coming back on TV again though).
--thing to do on a rainy day? Other than sleep, I like to craft too.
--restaurant? BBQ anything. I will just about anything for some home cooked mashed potatoes.
--Etsy seller? DennisAnderson - I love this guys soap. I use it every day. His soap is the only thing I look forward to in the morning other than my peanut butter and banana.

I’m a full time crafter and former sculptor and I live in Auckland City New Zealand with my hubby and two teenage children.
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
I first read about Etsy in Readymade magazine and thought it was the place for me and started my first shop trixiedelicious
This was back when there were only 45,000 shops not 200,000 like today.
The first few months nothing really happened and I nearly gave up on it.
It was a slower marketplace back then and obviously had a smaller audience. Most of the buyers were other sellers and I did a bit of trading just to create feedback and get my stuff out there.
Hotlegs is a new project that came out of making fabric stuff to sell at a market and a way of recycling old clothing and fabric around the house. It is nice to work in a different material and have a rest from vintage china.
How did you get into making what you make?
Making things is a natural thing for me starting with the sandpit when I was about 2 years old. Both my parents made a living from making things- my Dad had a sail making and canvas goods business in the 70s. He even designed his own tents and trailer awnings for campers.
My mum was a seamtress and worked making samples for various designers around town. She got her training making the sleepwear and underwear of the 60s with all the structure, satin and lace which is so fashionable now.

My life has a continuous soundtrack so it’s hard to choose one artist but I would have to say Bowie is my all time fave followed by the Rolling Stones. Debbie Harry from Blondie is my style icon.

I’m a full time crafter and former sculptor and I live in Auckland City New Zealand with my hubby and two teenage children.
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
I first read about Etsy in Readymade magazine and thought it was the place for me and started my first shop trixiedelicious
This was back when there were only 45,000 shops not 200,000 like today.
The first few months nothing really happened and I nearly gave up on it.
It was a slower marketplace back then and obviously had a smaller audience. Most of the buyers were other sellers and I did a bit of trading just to create feedback and get my stuff out there.
Hotlegs is a new project that came out of making fabric stuff to sell at a market and a way of recycling old clothing and fabric around the house. It is nice to work in a different material and have a rest from vintage china.

Stellar Seller: Belle and Boo
This week's Stellar Seller is Belle and Boo. She was nominated by CorkysCookies who bought some precious prints from her shop for her daughter's room! We contacted Mandy of Belle and Boo and requested she share her stellarness with the Etsy community. Here she is, enjoy!

My name is Mandy, I live in North London with my partner Russ, who is an incredibly talented animator (& my tech support!) We own a lovely one bed garden flat & recently had a HUGE studio built in the garden. It takes me 8 seconds to get to work, so its a blessing I have to go the post office so often & interact with the outside world!
I run the business with my friend Kate, we make a great team, she is very business minded allowing me to be the flaky arty one !
I have a naughty expensive habit of buying a decaf latte from the Italian cafe almost everyday & I never miss an episode of the Archers.
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
I was first introduced to Etsy by a friend I was staying with in Sydney, she had recently opened a shop peepbags & had also bought a lot of really cool stuff.I was immediately hooked & started planning what I would sell. Once I had returned home to London, I spent a week sketching out ideas and in Nov 07 uploaded my first illustration 'Serenity Blue' I actually thought I had done it wrong as it quickly disappeared, after a frantic 20 mins or so I realised it had sold & that was he beginning of my Etsy story.
How did you get into making what you make?
I studied illustration at Leeds University & my final show was a collection of paintings of children. I went on the exhibit in small galleries, illustrated a number of children's books & worked a lot in the greetings card industry. The wonderful response to my etsy shop gave me the confidence to draw from my heart, I feel lucky everyday that this is my job.

Stellar Seller 7/19/08 Home Studio
This Saturday's Stellar Seller is Homestudio. In real life, Homestudio=Stefani & Mark, who, in our opinion, are quite the creative couple. :)

Well - I am really excited to be invited to participate on this blog! Thank you blackcatmima! I am an assemblage and collage artist living in San Diego. I have two lovely grown daughters, an awesome step-son and a goofy-yet-loving husband. I am lucky to have a working studio that I share with two other crazy artists, and I run the Etsy business from a home studio (do I need to say that it seems to spill over into every room!) – so fun!
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
I heard about Etsy when a friend started selling her crocheted mice, so I have been shopping for several years. And, it was absolutely love at first site! Now the experience of selling on Etsy is even better than shopping (if that’s possible) – all the people that I “meet” and the connections made - wow! I am completely convinced that each of us makes a difference in the lives of other artists every time we post on a blog, sell or buy something on Etsy, respond to a convo, or offer a tutorial. I am so grateful to be part of this growing community.
How do thrift stores fall into your Etsy business and do you have a local favorite?
I don’t know what I would do if people stopped getting rid of all these treasures! Yikes! I go to thrift stores all the time – there are several in San Diego – but my favorite is AMVETS near Pacific Highway. I ALWAYS find something there. And I think it is fun for people who shop on Etsy to know that I really hunt and search for the one-of-a-kind goodies that get posted in the shop. Not only do I resell some items, but I also use much of what I find in my own artwork.

website or blog, other than Etsy! – Love this blog http://andothersillythings.blogspot.com recently she moved her studio to her home and STILL managed to keep creating these perfect stuffed toys – I continue to be inspired by her dedication.
book and/or author? I adore reading – mainly a fiction gal – and anything where a mystery must be solved! Currently loving anything by Donna Leon because the mysteries are all set in Venice and she describes the long Italian lunches in such delicious detail!
song/music artist? Oops - I rely on my husband, John, to find music for me and put it on my ipod – sad, huh. I blame my upbringing which was a combination of Classical music and Herb Alpert / Tijuana Brass. I am a sucker for anything by U2.
Etsy seller? I would love to list all of the fantabulous shops that I see and experience. Pretty sure I am not the first person to say that! Here is one of my favs - a great artist that proves all those cast offs are being put to good use cocoondesigns.etsy.com – for a while I thought I might keep some of my old sweaters and try my hand at . . . never mind!

Saturday Stellar Seller 6/21/08

A little about myself:
My name is Lisa and I am an artist at heart. I have an Architecture degree from UC Berkeley but went into software engineering as my career. In order to feed my artistic side, I paint, draw, photograph and, of course, do a lot of ceramics. I love getting my hands dirty with clay. There's something really mesmerizing about the potter's wheel when it is spinning. I often don't sit down with a piece in mind - the piece reveals itself as I'm throwing.

How I got started: I've been doing ceramics for over 12 years and I had boxes and boxes of pieces I've made. A lot of times, I give them away to my friends. I did craft shows when I had time and the energy. I started my ETSY shop after my good friend pointed me to it. She said "look at this cute website. You should sell your stuff there." :D Now I have a dedicated studio space and spend a lot of my time enjoying the process of creation.

What inspires me:
My friends are very supportive and inspirational to me. They would call me up and say "Lisa, I was at such and such store shopping. I saw this item but I think I need something different. You can make that right?". I'd sketch it out and then the idea would churn for a while in my head. These nested pinch pots were one of those creations from my friend's suggestions. Or another friend decided to learn to be a bee keeper to harvest honey and asked me to make her some honey jars. I ended up making quite a few of these.
My other greatest inspiration is my loving dog Bailey - my shop's namesake. He is such an adorable dog that I like to put him on everything. He has an entire line of pottery called Bailey-ware. One day, I intend to extend the line to clothing and dish cloths. LOL
Sometimes when I'm on hikes, I'd pick up sticks, leaves and varies seeds with the intention of incorporating them into my ceramic pieces. Oh, if only I didn't have a day job.

P.P : My name is Trish, I’m a wife and mother of 2 beautiful young ladies. Both of my daughters are involved with the soap making business and my husband is one of our official soap testers.
Owls: Let us hear all about your shop & how you got started
P.P :
Several years ago we were vacationing in North Carolina and went window shopping. There was a small soap store that had the most beautiful soaps that we had ever seen. With birthdays and holidays right around the corner, we spent several hours in the shop stocking up and falling in love with handmade soap.
Once we returned to Michigan, I got a flyer in the mail from a local college – they were offering classes in handmade soap! Not one to ignore fate, I took the class and we began to make our own soap. After a few years of experimenting with different formulas, colorants, and scents, Pink Parchment Soaps was born.
Owls: What inspires you to create?
P.P. : Everything! Foods, nature, scents and people. It doesn’t take much!
Owls: Describe yourself in 1 word:
P.P : Crazy Soaper. Ok that’s two words! Making soap is so much fun. We just love experimenting with all the different ingredients, colors, color techniques and scents.
Owls: What is your favorite:
---decade in the 1900s? The 20’s. Women were wild and taking charge of their lives!

Stellar Seller: RememberWynn

How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
I stumbled across Etsy from fellow sewers (not sewers - euwwww) on http://www.sewforum.com/ but never listed my sewing on here, thought I would, but custom orders from my sister's boutique kept me too busy to make extras. Then when we got the laser, I was so happy I could make my own custom labels, then I thought I would like to share an affordable option with other cottage industries. Every option I could find online had a huge minimum order or set-up fee. The laser aspect has sort of replaced my sewing for the time being - And yes, of course, I love it!!!
How are you inspired to create?
I gather inspiration from everywhere! Anything old, anything new - which most new stuff is a take from the old - everything goes!
Describe yourself in 1 word: easy going, nope 2 words - laid back, still 2 words - hmmmm - stumped!
Do you have a favorite:
word or saying? love movie quotes, and a lot that no one but my daughter would get - we mix our words and parts of words within sentences (that often get repeated a million times)
dessert naner puddin' but the good old fashioned baked kind!
holiday? I love Thanksgiving for it's simplicity of focusing on family time with out any pressures of gifts and of course the food!!!

My name is Meagan, and I am the owner of not one but three Etsy shops: craftykathleen, fussygussy and paintedpretties I've been collecting fabric for many years now and decided about 2 years ago to give up the day job and go to work for myself. I sell super kitschy fabrics and notions, as well as handmade pot-holders, aprons, curtains, and other goodies. I received my BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001, and have been painting away ever since. I'm currently working on a series of portraits based on the idea of doppelgangers. Needless to say, I'm one very busy lady!!!
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
I was introduced to Etsy by a vendor at the SOWA Open Market in Boston (of which I am now an active participant). She liked the tote bag I was carrying and when I told her I'd made it, she said "Well...you HAVE to try out Etsy! It's the best!!!" And so it has been. I love Etsy and all that it has to offer.
How are you inspired to create?
I grew up in a creative household and have always been an aesthetically driven person. My father was a painter and my mother is (and always has been) very fashionable yet classic, both in her personal style and in the home. Basically, I can't help myself but be creative. It's in my bones, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Describe yourself in 1 word: Sincere.
Do you have a favorite:
word or saying?: I love the French word "gateau". I love the sound of it, and what it means (cake!!!)
dessert: Dunkan Hines chocolate cupcakes with pink tinted vanilla frosting.
book and/or author?: I have TOO many, but here are a few: Wuthering Heights, The Master and Margarita, A Drowned Maiden's Hair, Dracula, Doctor Zhivago, most books/stories by Stephen King, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Daphne DuMaurier.
vacation spot?: Any seaside town.
Etsy seller?: Again, TOO many to name. I would, though, like to give kudos to my sister's shop simplydaisy, as she makes beautiful things and has been such a support to me. Thank you also to squarejane for nominating me!!!

Stellar Seller: TjTUnraveled

Tell us & the Etsy world a bit about you, anything you'd like to share...
I am a substitute school teacher and I have been knitting since I was 12 years old. I have 2 Etsy stores, tjtunraveled, and tjtdesign.
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
I started on Etsy in 2007 when my husbands co-worker told me about the site. I love to knit and I wanted a place I could sell all of the pieces I started to collect. There are only so many knitted gifts you can give to your friends and family. I loved the community feel of Etsy and how easy it was to get started. I still get exited with each piece I sell.
How did you get into dying yarn and what inspires you to create the colorways you do?
After about a year, I was searching for another outlet for my creative side. I had been interested in opening up a new store and I was researching hand-dyed yarn. I thought about how I could connect the two stores together. Tjtunraveled came from the idea that it is a deconstructed version of my knitting store. My husband is such a driving force for the yarn store. He went to school for art and has such a wonderful eye and color palate. I am always going to him to work out ideas and come up with new shades to use. I also love when people ask me for special request colorways. I get requests for colorways based on a mood, or a place someone has visited. I have even gotten requests for colorways based on baby clothes and diaper covers. I often use those colorways again in my store for general sale.
I am inspired by the natural world around me as well as my love for knitting. When I come up with new colorways, I am always imagining how the colors would look in a scarf or other accessories. I think that perspective helps me come up with some wild colorways. I love when I re-skein the yarn after dying and seeing how the colors look together.
Describe yourself in 1 word:
If I had to describe myself in one word I think it would be organized. I am constantly working out new projects while juggling work, knitting, my dog Otis, and many other things.
Tell us your favorite:
I really don't have a favorite saying or word...My favorite color is blue and my favorite book is 1984 by George Orwell. It is what made me want to go into Sociology for my undergraduate work. I don't really have a favorite holiday either, but I love the winter. There is something about the cold and rain that I just love. That is why Oregon will always be my home.
I think all of my customers that sell on Etsy are my favorite sellers. I love to see what they create with my yarn. KnitandPearl is one of those stores. She creates such beautiful and unique pieces I am a little jealous of her work! Artisanimpact is another great Etsy store. Their pieces are just gorgeous!
Tell us & the Etsy world a bit about you, anything you'd like to share...
I am a substitute school teacher and I have been knitting since I was 12 years old. I have 2 Etsy stores, tjtunraveled, and tjtdesign.
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
I started on Etsy in 2007 when my husbands co-worker told me about the site. I love to knit and I wanted a place I could sell all of the pieces I started to collect. There are only so many knitted gifts you can give to your friends and family. I loved the community feel of Etsy and how easy it was to get started. I still get exited with each piece I sell.
How did you get into dying yarn and what inspires you to create the colorways you do?
After about a year, I was searching for another outlet for my creative side. I had been interested in opening up a new store and I was researching hand-dyed yarn. I thought about how I could connect the two stores together. Tjtunraveled came from the idea that it is a deconstructed version of my knitting store. My husband is such a driving force for the yarn store. He went to school for art and has such a wonderful eye and color palate. I am always going to him to work out ideas and come up with new shades to use. I also love when people ask me for special request colorways. I get requests for colorways based on a mood, or a place someone has visited. I have even gotten requests for colorways based on baby clothes and diaper covers. I often use those colorways again in my store for general sale.
I am inspired by the natural world around me as well as my love for knitting. When I come up with new colorways, I am always imagining how the colors would look in a scarf or other accessories. I think that perspective helps me come up with some wild colorways. I love when I re-skein the yarn after dying and seeing how the colors look together.
Describe yourself in 1 word:
If I had to describe myself in one word I think it would be organized. I am constantly working out new projects while juggling work, knitting, my dog Otis, and many other things.
Tell us your favorite:
I really don't have a favorite saying or word...My favorite color is blue and my favorite book is 1984 by George Orwell. It is what made me want to go into Sociology for my undergraduate work. Up & Coming...
In order to get a much more active team blog, we've decided to add a few new features to the blog. In addition to the Owl Spotlights where we have our individual members talk about whatever they want to, we're also working on bringing back our Stellar Seller feature as well. We haven't had a Stellar Seller feature since September, and we're about ready to share some of our awesome purchasing experiences from the holiday season.
We're also adding some brand new features, one feature (that we haven't name yet) will be us highlighting some of our favorite owls on Etsy. As in, real owls. :) The second feature, called Owl Finds, will highlight some items from Etsy that we like that all follow a similiar theme. For example, The Owls Find Trees would show some of our favorite picks that are trees. We're excited about this one as we have a lot of favorite things (and we tend to like similiar things, as teammates) so we're really looking forward to sharing our favorites with the world! So stay tuned!

Stellar Seller: ChopstixWaits
Tell us and the Etsy world a bit about you, anything you'd like to share...
My name is Chopstix Waits. I live in rochester ny with my great dane Angus and my hairless cat Chicken. I grew up here, traveled a bit when i was younger , and ended up buying a house a few years ago.I am a self taught seamstress and fiber artist. I sew,spin,felt and crochet full time, and spend most of my days in my attic studio. In my free time I west african dance, contra dance, and am currently learning russian, i also enjoy the occasional late night and slightly intoxicated dance party. When i can find the time, I love to travel for inspiration and textiles.
How did you meet Etsy? Was it love at first sight?
Etsy and i met at just the right time! I had quit my part time job bartending, and although i was doing some bridal , and costuming work, there is just not much of a market for my work in the city where i live. A friend of mine had an etsy shop, and i decided to check it out. I was lucky to have a small customer base that came with me and really got the ball rolling on etsy for me. I now work almost full time on etsy, and love how easy it is to use, and that i can reach a global market of customers.
How did you get into making what you make?
I have been sewing for as long as i can remember. Most of my family are artist and craftsman, and i grew up around a lot of creativity. When i was younger, i started making my own clothes because i could never find what i wanted. I love the color, history, and integrity of traditional clothing from India, Asia, and Africa, and i take constant inspiration from this.
Describe yourself in 1 word: wonderlust
Do you have a favorite:
favorite word or saying: As of late i am obsessed with this line from Pablo Nerudas Ode to sadness: "I will sweep the bits and pieces of your carcass to the four corners of the wind" . Its not really a saying, but beautiful in context
favorite color: bright
Favorite author: too many to choose just one, right now i am reading The hunter, the hammer and heaven by Robert Young Pelton.I also swear by lonely planet guide books.
Favorite holiday: I celebrate at random

Owls Stellar Seller, Zemphira
We Owls love sellers who love owls, and Zemphira falls into that catagory! She's got some precious owls in her fabric filled shop, some of which we're highlighting in this feature. Read the interview below to get to know her better, and visit her shop for more items like the ones pictured!
EO: Tell us and the Etsy world a bit about you, anything you'd like to share...
Zemphira: I am one of those people who have always been crafting. My mom had me doing arts and crafts things as long as I can remember - coloring, candle making, sewing, cooking, you name it. Then I really got into rubber stamping, beading, and now sewing. I lived in a very small Yupik eskimo village and I learned traditional beadwork and skin sewing. When I wasn't teaching I was beading. Now I have been reaquainted with my sewing machine, and I am sewing whenever I can. I enjoy making baby quilts as gifts for people, but I really love making art quilts and memory quilts.
EO: How did you end up on Etsy?
Zemphira: One day I was reading one of the crafty magazines and I saw an article about Etsy and I had to check it out. Whenever I make something for a friend or family member it's always "you should open a shop" or "you should sell those" So here I am on Etsy, with an open shop, trying to sell "those".
EO: What inspires you to create?
Zemphira: Everything inspires me - old photos, my family, nature, my travels, other cultures, fabric . . .
EO: Describe yourself in one word.
Zemphira: Impulsive
EO: What is your favorite...
- dessert? Kahlua Cheesecake
- cartoon from your childhood? the Snorkels
- time of year and why? I love all seasons - OHIO is perfect for that - But I guess I'll pick Autumn, I always feel very inspired to create, bake, go outside, get ready for holidays....
